The Visy Pulp and Paper Mill in Tumut was a $460 Million project, of which Joss Construction was engaged as Construction Managers responsible for the contract administration and site supervision, in close consultation with the Client, of all building and civil works, and some engineering works, totalling approximately $70 Million.
The Client Brief was to manage the construction of the mill with the most important criteria being time, without compromising cost or quality. The Mill is situated on approximately 3000 acres, 12km west of Tumut, with the Mill Site area contained on approximately 30 acres. The mill now produces in the order of 260,000 tonnes of Kraft Paper, for export and local markets, with its primary use being the production of cardboard.
Joss Construction’s responsibilities included the construction of the Paper Machine Building, Reel Store, Fibre Line, Lime Kiln, Tank Footings, Boiler Room Footings, Administration Building, Control Room and Wet Surface Air Condenser.
The construction included approximately 20,000m² of concrete, and some 6,000 tonnes of structural steel, and during the peak of construction, the total workforce reached 900.
As the plant and equipment used to manufacture paper must be installed within the millimetre, it was critical that the structure was constructed to these critical tolerances.
The mill is one of the most automated, state of the art and technologically advanced in the world, and won the Institute of Engineering Australia, Engineering Excellence Awards for Products, Manufacturing and Control Systems, and a Highly Commended for Project Management.
